Social media guidance

We would love to hear from you on our Facebook, Twitter and other social media pages. If you’ve been really pleased with something we’ve done, it’s always great to hear your feedback. If you have an issue or want to ask a question, we will do our best to help you.

Rochdale is a great place to live, work and visit and we want to share that with as many people as possible. If you know of an event, place or business that might be of interest to other people in Rochdale, why not share it on our pages? We’d also love to see your pictures from across the borough – send them to us with the ​#myrochdale tag.

Replying and responding to messages

We generally monitor our social media accounts between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, except on public holidays. Our accounts may occasionally be monitored outside these hours, for example at an event or council meeting.

We always try to respond to as many replies or comments as we can. Unfortunately, we do receive a lot of social media traffic, which means this isn't always possible and we can sometimes miss posts.

Our media team, which run our social media accounts, will sometimes send your questions off to customer services or other colleagues to find out information for you. This means that there could be a delay in getting the information, so please be patient – we will do our best to get back to you as quickly as possible. Even if we do not reply, we are listening and will act on or pass on your comments as appropriate.

Liking and following

We can't like or follow everyone as sometimes the numbers of accounts are just too high for us to manage. So, please don't be offended if we don't. This doesn't mean we don't like you or are not interested in what you have to say.

We frequently follow or like people who provide information that is relevant to our work as a local authority (for example government agencies, local media, and our other public sector partners) or those whose information we can pass on for the benefit of local citizens.

Occasionally, we'll also try and lend our support to local and national campaigns and there will also be times we'll need to like or follow an account in order to take part in conversations.

Please remember that while me may like or follow someone, it doesn't mean that we endorse them.

Blocking and unfollowing

We try to avoid blocking social media accounts but occasionally may take this action where an individual has repeatedly contravened the rules of a particular social media site. Please don’t take it personally if for some reason we unfollow you. We might be going through a review of accounts or simply cutting down on numbers.

Sharing and retweeting

We try and share or retweet information that we think will be of interest or use to Rochdale citizens and businesses. However please don't be offended if we don't retweet something you ask us to. Again, the numbers can be too big for us to manage. As a trusted organisation, any sharing of information could be seen as endorsement of a particular view, individual or organisation, and it's important that we remain impartial and protect the council's reputation.

Although we always follow the normal rules and guidelines of social media sites, we also have some of our own rules. These include:

  • Don't post messages that are unlawful, defamatory or libellous, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually oriented or racially offensive.
  • Don't bully, harass or intimidate any individual or organisation.
  • Don't impersonate someone else.
  • Don't swear.
  • Be civil, tasteful and relevant.
  • Don't post content copied from elsewhere, for which you do not own the copyright.
  • Don't post the same message, or very similar messages, repeatedly (also called "spamming"). 
  • Don't publicise your, or anyone else's, personal information, such as contact details.
  • Don't advertise products or services.
  • Don't post any political comments.

When these rules are not followed, we will rely on the measures of protection and intervention which the social networking site already has in place, for example by flagging comments or alerting them to any breaches of the site's terms and conditions.

Please be aware, we reserve the right to remove any contributions that break the rules of the relevant community, or any of our guidelines.

Defamatory comments

We take defamatory statements posted on any of our sites very seriously, so we ask you to take care when posting on our pages. By publishing such a statement we can both get into serious trouble. We will therefore take down any statement that we consider could be deemed to be defamatory.

Political neutrality

The council itself, as opposed to its political administration, must be politically neutral in its communications. Therefore, please do not use any of our pages to promote party political messages or other content.

We will remove any comments that in our view, may compromise our obligation to maintain political neutrality.

What is social networking?

Social networking on the internet is a way of using your computer to talk to people, share pictures and join groups.


Twitter is a social networking service that enables users to send short messages, called 'tweets', and read those from other users. You can post messages from the website, from an application on your mobile phone, from a third party piece of software (such as Tweetdeck), or by sending text messages from your mobile phone (at the standard text message charge).

You can view messages from people or organisations that you have chosen to 'follow' in the same way - including choosing whose updates you want to receive to your mobile phone.

Rochdale Borough Council uses Twitter to provide updates and links to our latest news, events, consultations, job vacancies and other information. We will also publish urgent messages through Twitter as well as through this website and other methods, where appropriate.

You don't need to register with Twitter to view our updates, but if you do register you'll be able to create your own 'feed' of tweets from people and organisations you're interested in. By registering, you'll also be able to let other people 'follow' your updates and send public and private messages to other users.

You can also talk informally to us on Twitter. Tell us about living, working or visiting the borough or let us know what you think of the information we are tweeting about. Messages you 'tweet' to us are read by a human and if you raise a genuine concern, we'll do our best to direct you to the best person to help you.

If you would like to send us a message on Twitter, start your tweet with @rochdalecouncil. This will send a public message to us.

If you would like to send a private message, called Direct Message, use the message option in the right hand column of our profile or use the Direct Message option in your chosen Twitter application.

Accessible Twitter​

This is an alternative to the main Twitter website and provides the same service but with optimisation for people with disabilities.

Once you have registered your account with Twitter you can use your username and password to sign in to this version.


Facebook is a free social networking website. Users can join networks organised by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. You can use it to share thoughts, internet links, photographs and videos with your friends, as well as create 'events' to invite people to attend. Hundreds of millions of people around the world use Facebook every day to keep in touch with people or interact by sharing favoured web content with others.

Once you've signed up to Facebook, you control who you accept as 'friends' and can control the privacy settings on everything you post to make sure only those you allow to see your posts can access them.

Organisations, companies or causes can have their own Facebook 'page' that users can select to 'like'. If you choose to do this, it means that information and updates put on Facebook by that organisation will appear in your 'news feed' alongside posts from your friends and colleagues.

Rochdale Borough Council has its own Facebook page that you can subscribe to. It's a handy way to find out about news and events through a channel you might visit more often than this website.
