Apply for listed building consent

A listed building is a building or structure of special architectural or historic interest. They're recognised by the government as needing protection from being demolished or changed. Listed buildings can be churches, houses, bridges and gates.

What changes do you need consent for?

You must apply for listed building consent if:

  • You want to demolish all or part of a listed building.
  • You want to alter or extend a listed building in a way which would affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest.

It's illegal to carry out work which needs listed building consent without receiving it first. If you work on a listed building without consent, you could receive a fine or a prison sentence. In some cases, you'll also have to pay to have the work undone.

If you're not sure whether you need listed building consent, call us or email us using the contact details on this page for some advice.
