Youth Opportunity Fund takes off

25 June 2018

Councillor Kieran Heakin. Our youth service has launched a new Youth Opportunity Fund to give young people across the borough the chance to apply for money to finance new activities.

The Youth Opportunity Fund is a new fund for young people aged 8-19 who can now apply for funding of up to £2000 for projects to give young people somewhere to go, something to do or someone to talk to.

The fund was established after councillors suggested money from the Manchester Airport dividend should be invested in young people. The airport dividend comes from profits made by the airport and is split between all councils in Greater Manchester as they are part owners of the region's major air transport hub.

Opportunities for young people

Cabinet member for children's services, Councillor Kieran Heakin, said: "We are so proud to bring this fund in. When we work with young people they have some extraordinary ideas and this fund will brings those ideas to life. We want to help kick start some of these wonderful ideas young people have. I know there is a wealth of creativity out there in our young people so I would encourage them all to apply to us.

"We are looking to fund a wide variety of applications, and we want to hear from young people and groups that will provide new activities for young people in a safe, enjoyable places to go, something to do and someone to talk to. We also encourage joint funding with other young people or organisations."

Some funding ideas might be around sporting activities, Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions or summer activity programmes.

How to apply

Applications need to demonstrate how their project will provide realistic, well thought out and achievable outcomes. These should help improve and support young people's mental health, resilience and wellbeing and provide additional activities for young people aged 8-19.

As part of the fund, we'll involve young people in the planning, delivery and evaluation process. Applications will be judged by a panel made up of young people from the children's council, youth council and the youth service, who will be supported by our youth workers and finance staff.

Applications to the fund are open till Thursday, 5 July 2018.
