Recycling team shortlisted for award as borough recycling rates hit almost 50 per cent

03 August 2018

Green recycling bins. We've been shortlisted for the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) Annual awards for Best Service Team: Waste Management and Recycling.

The competition has been extremely competitive, with over 100 organisations taking part from across the UK. Only the very best submissions have been shortlisted in each category and Rochdale is among 6 authorities to reach the recycling finals of this year's awards.

The award ceremony, now in its 18th year, will be held on Wednesday, 12 September 2018 in Edinburgh, where hopefully our team will come out on top.

Recycling success

The switch to 3 weekly collections in 2015 has helped increase the borough's kerbside recycling rate from 37 per cent - one of the lowest in Greater Manchester - to almost 53.7 per cent last year.

The nomination reflects us achieving nearly a 50 per cent borough wide recycling rate thanks to improved operational efficiencies and an increased focus on changing the behaviours of harder to reach communities.

Initiatives including upsizing recycling bins at targeted households, a coordinated communications drive to tackle contamination, education drives for both year 5 pupils across the borough and residents in flats and communal areas have gone hand in hand with the recruitment of permanent crew members, extended training and new technology and vehicles.

Councillor Neil Emmott, our Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "There's a growing understanding among companies, organisations and individuals of just how important recycling is. The team are close to achieving the original 50 per cent recycling target 2 years early and this award nomination is a testament to their hard work.

"With the borough recycling over 59 per cent of the waste collected at the kerbside in June 2018, this service is going from strength to strength and I'd like to thank everyone across the borough who is playing a huge part in this recycling success".
