The outstanding work of the council’s Home Improvement Agency (HIA) has again been recognised on the national stage after it was shortlisted for major awards.
For a second year in a row the service, which provides adaptations for elderly and vulnerable residents, is in line for gongs at the renowned Healthy Housing Awards.
Judges were wowed by the outstanding delivery of the team, shortlisting it across the caseworker of the year, technical officer of the year, home adaptions service of the year, contractor of the year and social housing adaptations of the year categories.
It is another boost for the innovative service, which works in partnership with Rochdale Boroughwide Housing to ensure hundreds of elderly and vulnerable residents a year are supported to remain independent in their own homes.
State-of-the-art adaptations provided by the team include hand rail, grab rails, stair lifts, level access showers and much more.
In 2019 the service was runner-up in the Disabled Facilities Grant Adaptations Service of the Year category, with judges praising the high quality work of council staff to deliver continued improvement.
This year’s winners will be announced next week, in a special virtual ceremony.
Gary Shaw, a joiner in the HIA service who has been shortlisted for technical officer of the year, said: “I am very proud to be have been shortlisted and that my work, and that of all the team, has been recognised in this way. We are making a positive difference to the lives of so many residents, which provides a great deal of job satisfaction knowing that people can remain independent in their own homes as a result of the work we do.”
Councillor Iftikhar Ahmed, cabinet member for social care and ageing well, said: “This outstanding service has surpassed itself yet again with incredible haul of shortlisted categories for these highly coveted awards. I know from speaking with my constituents how much they value and appreciate the work of the HIA team. They deliver a service to be proud of, helping to reduce inequalities, promote independent living and ensure people can safely remain in their own home. A huge well done to all the staff in this superb service. It is a team to be proud of and I wish them every success at the awards.”
