Help out at your local library

Libraries are looking for volunteers to help with a variety of duties. In return, we can offer you the chance to make a positive difference in their local communities.

Library computer support volunteer

All our libraries offer FREE internet access and ICT facilities to its customers. This opportunity involves offering support to the public in their use of the computer facilities. The volunteer would be available within a library, at the same time each week, and offer support and advice to the public on using the ICT facilities, including:

  • Internet, including the UK Online Learn My Way course.
  • Email.
  • Word processing.
  • Printing.

Storytime volunteer

This will suit someone who enjoys sharing books, songs and action rhymes with under 5s, their parents and carers. This would mainly involve:

  • Meet and greet children, parents and carers.
  • Reading aloud to children.
  • Overseeing craft activities, materials will be provided.
  • Assist in preparing and clearing the space and equipment.
  • Engage and chat with children and their parents/carers before and after sessions.
  • Directing specific book or library queries to staff.

Training will be provided in all aspects of the post and volunteers will be supported and supervised by local library staff.

Summer Reading Challenge volunteer

Would you enjoy talking to children about reading? Spend the summer with us, get involved in your local community and make new friends. This would mainly involve:

  • Encouraging children to join the challenge.
  • Registering children for the challenge.
  • Encouraging children to discuss what they have been reading.
  • Explaining to children and their parents/carers how to take part.
  • Encouraging children to progress and finish the challenge.
  • Assisting with events and library promotions.
  • Handing out rewards as necessary.
  • Promoting the reading challenge website.
  • Distribution of materials to all libraries.
  • Assisting with administration such as filing of membership cards.

Reading group volunteer

We are looking to recruit volunteers to lead new and established reading groups in selected libraries, encouraging communities to share the pleasure of reading. This role will suit someone who has a love of reading, the desire and knowledge to pass this on to other group members and the commitment to run sessions on a regular basis. This would mainly involve:

  • Assisting in preparing and clearing the space where the reading group will take place.
  • Welcome participants, ensuring that new members feel at ease.
  • Facilitating sessions and encouraging participation of all the members. Staff will provide guidance and resources to assist you with this.
  • Working with the groups to decide on future books to read.
  • Liaising with staff to obtain enough copies of the chosen titles.
  • Promoting the group as appropriate, with support from library staff to bring in new members.
  • Being the point of contact for all the members and pass their feedback and queries to library staff.

Library events support volunteer

Rochdale Libraries host a wide range of events throughout the year, including author visits, poetry days and coffee mornings. This opportunity involves assisting staff in the delivery of library events and activities and would mainly involve:

  • Assisting with the preparation of resources for the event including photocopying and setting up displays.
  • Assisting with the preparation and distribution of publicity.
  • Helping to prepare the library for events including the moving of furniture and setting up refreshments.
  • Meeting and greeting the public.
  • Assisting staff with the running of events and activities.
  • Administrative work – such as recording the names and numbers of people attending events.
  • Assisting staff with the tidying and evaluation of sessions.
  • Supporting the promotion of the library service in the community.

Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival volunteer

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival which takes place annually in October, and help thousands of people enjoy exciting events at Rochdale Central Library and other venues. This would mainly involve:

  • Meet and greet visitors at Number One Riverside as they enter the building. Be a visible friendly face and give out programmes.
  • Help register visitors.
  • Signpost ticket holders to the appropriate area where an event is taking place.
  • Check visitors tickets before the start of an event.
  • Supervise during events – for example helping with the author/leader of the event.
  • Help manage queues for book signings.
