Has your benefit been sanctioned?

If your Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) or Employment Support Allowance (ESA) is sanctioned and you're in receipt of Housing Benefit you need to contact us.

Ring us immediately on 0300 303 8870

If you don't contact us we may stop paying your Housing Benefit until you do so.

Why has my benefit been sanctioned?

Your JSA could be stopped as a penalty (known as a sanction) for example if you:

  • Don’t go to a Jobcentre Plus when asked.
  • Turn down a job or training.
  • Don’t apply for any jobs.
  • Don’t go to any training booked for you.
  • Leave your job or training without a good reason or because of your behaviour.

A Jobcentre Plus adviser can tell you how long your JSA will be stopped for. It could be up to 3 years.

Sanctions may result in suspension of Housing Benefit.

Sanctioned claimants may still be eligible for Housing Benefit but you must ring us on 0300 303 8870 to tell us that your JSA or ESA has been sanctioned.

Sanctioned claimants may be eligible for a hardship payment if they have no other sources of support. Please contact your local Jobcentre for advice.
