Mayor Making Ceremony 2019-2020

We're holding this year's Mayor Making Ceremony on Wednesday, 22 May 2019.

During the ceremony, the current Mayor of Rochdale will step down and we'll appoint the mayor and mayoress for 2019-2020.

Councillor Mohammed Zaman

The Mayor of Rochdale 2018-2019

The Mayor of Rochdale.

Born in Azad Kashmir, Councillor Mohammed Zaman refers to himself as a Rochdalian. On his arrival in Rochdale in 1975 he started his first paid job as a labourer in Arrow Mill in Castleton, which caused him a little heartache as he had different dreams of England. He wanted to quit his job but due to family responsibilities he continued to work and pursued different opportunities within the company. With a keen interest in teaching and management he was taken on as a trainee mechanic and later promoted to assistant supervisor, then supervisor with Courtaulds Ltd, until being made redundant in 1987 during a major decline of the textile industry.

He's a former local government officer, who served as a community languages service co-ordinator for Bury Council for 18 years and over 25 years as a part-time youth worker in various community organisations within the Rochdale borough. Councillor Zaman went on to complete a diploma in teaching community languages, certificates in bilingual skills, youth and community work culminating in a postgraduate degree in teaching. In 2006, Councillor Zaman took early retirement and took a part time teaching role at Hopwood Hall College to teach the diploma in public services interpreting, which helped many individuals from different nationalities to gain access to training, employment and progression in their careers.

He has been a member of the Labour Party since 1984 and following retirement he became councillor for Milkstone and Deeplish ward in 2011 and in 2015 was re-elected with an increased majority. He is very popular within the community and always willing to help and support local residents. He has successfully represented this ward for the past 6 years and hopes to continue serving the community.
