Youth empowerment project

Youth Empowerment is a resource for support and information for young people aged 13-19 and is well established in the borough of Rochdale.

The project supports the development of:

  • Youth Forums in each of the Townships
  • Youth Parliament Election process
  • Member of UK Youth Parliament
  • Youth Council
  • Youth Opportunity Fund / Youth Capital Fund
  • Youth Banks

The work of the Youth Empowerment Team is built upon the UK Member of Youth Parliament scheme. There has been an elected Youth MP each term since it began in 2001. The MYP is supported by Rochdale Youth Council which has a membership of 60 young people.

The Youth Council are actively involved in influencing decisions that affect the lives of young people. Their achievements include outcomes such as impacting strategically on the ‘Aiming High’ and ‘Every Child Matters’ documents, contributing to or being consulted about a range of initiatives including Rochdale Connexions Service, Children and Young People’s Trust, also issues around Young People and Health, Education and Aspirations.

The Youth Empowerment team work to make sure young people have a voice by providing opportunities for young people to make things better in their communities. They inform and support young people in the different ways that will help and encourage young people to speak out, promote young people in a positive way, celebrate achievement and commitment and provide fun activities and projects where young people can learn different skills and work together.
